Jing 2.4.1 [Download of the Day]

A description of Jing, developed by TechSmith, might read: a simple screen capture/recording software that lets you edit your images, save or share the images and videos, and, also sports a cool interface. Though we usually insist on featuring absolute freeware for our Download of the Day section, the differences between the free and paid version are minimal, and you can make full use of most of its features, without reaching for your wallet.
While Jing does screen capturing/recording no better than most other such software, its main differentiators are its image/video editing capabilities, its uploading/sharing features, and its always on top minimalist interface.
Screen capture/recording
Both functions are called up by a single hotkey, and thereafter you can change the suggested time-stamped filename, edit/copy it the clipboard it if it’s an image, save the file (PNG for image or SWF for video), or share it.
Image editing

Lets you add frames, arrows, text, and highlights to the image, in many colours.
Uploading/sharing
You will have to make a free Screencast account, and thereafter, any image or video you want to share will be easily accessible from your 2GB of online storage space, via a tiny URL, that’s automatically pasted in your clipboard, or can be found at the Screencast website. If you are still wondering what’s in the Jing Pro version, well not much more, just some convenient features you could easily choose to do without, if you don’t mind using additional software or spending some extra time. You can also invest in paid software such as Snagit and Camtasia Studio to directly edit images and videos from the capture and recording screen.

On the whole, if you are looking to capture video or images of a fullscreen application, such as a video player or game, you might want to look elsewhere for software that’s dedicated to such purposes. Jing however, in any incarnation, is great for recording tutorial/walkthrough videos, and for serving many of the innumerable reasons for taking a screenshot. Apple's much-rumoured CDMA iPhone 4 seemingly bound for India on Tata and Reliance

Another week, and another rumour about the CDMA iPhone – and this time, it’s supposedly going to hit Indian shores. Whether this will be before the speculated Verizon Wireless launch by late this year is still unknown, but apparently talks between Apple, Reliance Communications, and Tata Teleservices started about four or five months ago.

  Carrier-bound, contract phones never really caught on in a big way in India, but then again, maybe this is how the smartphone revolution will start in India, with thousands suddenly signing up for top-end phones - if priced attractively of course. Maybe the iPhone CDMA could pave the way.

In slightly unrelated news, Apple is also rumoured to be coming out of exclusive iPhone carrier agreements in Germany and The Netherlands.

aliens hijacked space craft???

Melbourne, May 13 (ANI): After leaving Earth's surface 33 years ago, the Voyager 2 spacecraft may have been hijacked by aliens, it has been claimed.



Scientists had installed a 12-inch disk containing music and greetings in 55 languages in case intelligent extraterrestrial life ever found it, but the spacecraft is sending signals in an unknown format.



"It seems almost as if someone had reprogrammed or hijacked the probe - thus perhaps we do not yet know the whole truth," The Daily Telegraph quoted alien expert Hartwig Hausdorf as saying.



The spacecraft late last month began sending science data 8.6 billion miles to Earth in a changed format that mission managers could not decode.



Engineers are working to solve the data transmissions and have since instructed Voyager 2 to only transmit data on its own health and status while they work on the problem.



Launched in 1977, Voyager 2 and its twin, Voyager 1, explored the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune and kept on going. Nearly 33 years later, they are the most distant human-made objects.



Voyager 1 is 10.5 billion miles from Earth and in about five years is expected to pass through the heliosphere, a bubble the sun creates around the solar system, and enter interstellar space. Voyager 2 will follow after that.

HOW TO CREATE A COPPER PHOTOSHOP EFFECT

This is a strong and eye-catching text effect, though relatively simple to create. We’ll be using bevel and emboss styles, pattern overlays, and combining different techniques to mock-up the text into a related background. Step 1

Copper is a wonderful metal. It’s strong and resistant but easy to handle. Besides, copper is great when you’re designing grunge and old-style graphics or websites. So here’s a simple and quick way to add this particular effect to your text and shapes.

First, create a new black document, 1024 pixels by 768 pixels this time. Then decide where you’re going to put your text in. I’ve found this image of a ruined wall, and after adjusting the Hue/Saturation (Command + U), and Levels (Command + L) using the values of the image below, our background is ready.

Step 2

Since the copper has green tones when it gets old (like the Statue of Liberty in New York, USA). We’ll need to add some green details here and there, Create a new layer and set this color (#1A3404) as the foreground, then using a medium size soft brush draw some spots. Next, change the "Green Spots" layer Blending Mode to Color Dodge.

Step 3

Press Command + A to select all, then Command + Option + D to Feather the selection 50px.

Step 4

Fill the selection with black (#000000) into a new layer called "Frame." Then go to Filter > Distort > Wave, and set the Max Wave length to 370.

Step 5

Now create a new layer, name it "Light" and fill it with a White to Black (#FFFFFF to #000000) Reflected Gradient. Then go to Image > Adjustments > Curves (Command + M) and set the curves just like it shows in the image below. Finally, change the "Light" layer Blending mode to Overlay. Keep this layer always above all others in the layers palette.

Step 6

Now begins the fun part! Write your text, I’m using Rockwell typeface, but you can use any other.

Step 7

Now let’s look at the creative flow of making a layer style. A good point to start is adding a Gradient Overlay matching the scene lightening. In this case add a five colors gradient (#000000, #160700, #783501, #421F01, and #050505) and an Angle of 140º. Also, add a 5 pixels Gradient Stroke effect using five colors (#803C17, #A44F30, #52230F, #52230F, and #381408) Angle: -95º.

Step 8

Now add the shadows, first an Inner Shadow, then a Drop Shadow, take special care with the Blending Modes of every Style. Both shadows must be in Multiply mode.

Step 9

Next add a Color Overlay effect (#742901), but set the Blend mode to Linear Dodge (Add). Then add a dimmed (Opacity 16%) Satin effect.
